The Grant County Courthouse in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, a remarkable historical site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the region's past. Opened in 1906, the courthouse replaced its predecessor from 1878, marking a significant moment in the county's development.
A lively tale of rivalry surrounds the courthouse, with the town of Herman once fighting to move the county seat to their town. The eventual court decision in favor of Elbow Lake not only solidified its position as the county seat but also paved the way for the future success of Knute Nelson, who later became a Congressional representative, the governor of Minnesota, and a U.S. Senator.
Visitors to the Grant County Courthouse can marvel at the Beaux-Arts architectural style of the three-story building, featuring a towering dome that rises 102.5 feet above ground level. The elegant design includes Portwing brownstone from a quarry near Duluth, a slate roof, terrazzo floors, pink Tennessee marble wainscoting in the main corridor, and marble borders in other corridors.
The courthouse has a playful history, too. In July 2005, three men disguised as Grant County Highway Department workers stole the cornerstone from the building, sparking suspicion among the citizens of Herman. The cornerstone later appeared at the Grant County Fair in Herman, where fairgoers could take a photo with it for a $20 donation, with proceeds going to the Grant County Historical Society.
In 2017, the courthouse's interior decorative elements underwent meticulous preservation and restoration, including the conservation of murals in the courtroom and rotunda, the stained glass in the dome, and repairs to ornamental and flat plaster.
